The U.S. House of Representatives has successfully passed a bill to extend government operations through the beginning of 2024, ensuring that there will be no harmful shutdown before the holidays. The proposed two-step, stop-gap measure, put forward by Speaker Mike Johnson, received bipartisan support, with a vote of 336-95.

One of the lawmakers who voted in favor of the bill was U.S. Rep. Harold "Hal" Rogers (KY-05), who emphasized the importance of avoiding a government shutdown during the holiday season. He commended Speaker Johnson's efforts, stating, "I applaud Speaker Johnson's first big win on the House Floor, giving the American people added confidence through the upcoming holidays."

Rogers also highlighted the significance of the bill for the nation's military and veterans. He stated, "It ensures that we continue providing critical resources to our military members defending America and our interests around the world, and takes care of our country’s heroic veterans." The bill includes full funding for U.S. troops and temporary extensions for essential programs such as Community Health Centers and the National Flood Insurance Program.

While acknowledging that a continuing resolution (CR) is not his preferred method of conducting business, Congressman Rogers emphasized the necessity of avoiding a government shutdown. He expressed the need for more time to complete fiscal year 2024 appropriations bills, which would enable the House to negotiate more effectively with the Senate and eventually pass full-year appropriations bills.

The bill will now proceed to the Senate for consideration. If approved, it will provide stability and continuity in government operations, ensuring that crucial services and programs continue without interruption.
