George McAfee died March 4, 2009, at age 90

George McAfee died on March 4, 2009, from chemical burns after ingesting a toxic cleaning solution in an assisted living facility. McAfee was known for his versatility as a halfback and return specialist. He was the second overall pick in the 1940 NFL Draft. He played eight seasons for the Chicago Bears. He led the NFL with 12 touchdowns in 1941. His career paused for U.S. Navy service during World War II. After the war, he led the league in punt return yards in 1948 and 1950. He retired with 39 career touchdowns and a 12.78-yard punt return average, still an NFL record. He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1961 and to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1966. He was born in Corbin, Kentucky, and his legacy remains part of Corbin’s sports history.
