U.S. Representative Harold “Hal” Rogers was sworn in for his 23rd consecutive term representing Kentucky's Fifth Congressional District. As the Dean of the House, he also had the honor of swearing in Mike Johnson as the 56th Speaker of the House from Louisiana.

“It is an honor to continue serving the people of Southern and Eastern Kentucky, and echoing their voices on Capitol Hill," Congressman Rogers stated. He emphasized the importance of upcoming work with a Republican-led Congress and President-elect Donald Trump returning to office. Rogers mentioned priorities such as securing borders, making America affordable again, and standing firm against adversaries. He praised Speaker Johnson for his leadership during this critical time.

In his remarks before swearing in Speaker Johnson, Congressman Rogers spoke about American self-rule: "Today, we celebrate our shared American self-rule... The speaker of the United States House of Representatives is the crucial protector and promoter of self-rule – the keeper of the dream."

Speaker Johnson outlined his commitments to extending Trump Tax Cuts, restoring energy dominance, reinstating fear in enemies, and focusing on peace through strength.

House Members voted on rules for the 119th Congress as their first official action. This included changing requirements for offering a motion to vacate the House Speaker from one Member to a minimum of nine Members. The vote passed along party lines.
