U.S. Representative Harold “Hal” Rogers has announced the approval of a new federal prison facility in Letcher County, Kentucky. The Bureau of Prisons (BOP) Director Colette Peters confirmed the decision by publishing an official Record of Decision in the Federal Register. This medium-security prison and camp will be constructed in Roxana.

“I’m thrilled that the many years of hard work by local leaders in Letcher County have paid off. They have improved broadband and strengthened local infrastructure, in effort to show the BOP that they were committed to supporting a new prison and the hundreds of jobs it will bring to the region,” said Congressman Rogers. “Director Peters said the BOP is going to build a new modern, state-of-the-art facility in Letcher County that focuses on safety and wellness.”

The plan involves acquiring approximately 500 acres of land for constructing a Federal Correctional Institution and Federal Prison Camp designed to accommodate 1,408 adults. The decision highlights the necessity for modern facilities due to outdated existing ones.

In August, Congressman Rogers hosted Director Peters and her team for discussions with regional leaders about economic development related to this project. Elwood Cornett, cofounder of the Letcher County Planning Commission, expressed gratitude for Congressman Rogers' support: “We have worked for nearly 20 years to bring these much-needed jobs to Letcher County... I can’t thank Congressman Rogers enough for believing in us and being our champion along the way.”

As part of his role on the House Appropriations Committee, Congressman Rogers has secured over $500 million for this project. The BOP estimates design work and property acquisitions will take about one year before construction begins.

Currently, more than 1,300 people are employed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Kentucky’s Fifth Congressional District.
