U.S. Representative Harold "Hal" Rogers announced a $10 million federal earmark for Morehead State University's Space Science Center during his visit to the campus on Thursday. The funding is part of Community Project Funding aimed at expanding the university's deep space network, enhancing its two space tracking stations to support future government-funded and commercial space programs.

Congressman Rogers, who chairs the House appropriations subcommittee responsible for funding science-related federal agencies, stated, "The staff and students at Morehead State are now involved in some of the United States’ most innovative and historic space missions. This project will allow the space science center to support future NASA programs, including NASA’s Near Space Network, Artemis and the Moon to Mars Program."

Dr. Jay Morgan, President of Morehead State University, expressed gratitude for Congressman Rogers' efforts: “We are incredibly grateful for the support and leadership of Congressman Hal Rogers in securing this critical funding for Morehead State’s Space Science Program. His dedication to advancing science and technology in our region has been instrumental in positioning MSU as a leader in space research and exploration.”

In addition to the current funding announcement, Congressman Rogers has also requested an additional $7.5 million earmark for fiscal year 2025. This proposed funding aims to enhance MSU's capabilities in providing payload operations for government and commercial space stations. The request has been approved by the House Appropriations Committee but awaits further budget negotiations.

Dr. Ben Malphrus, Director of the MSU Space Science Center, highlighted the significance of this support: “This funding is a game-changer for Morehead State’s Space Science Program. It enables us to further enhance our research and technological capabilities, allowing our students and faculty to participate in groundbreaking projects that contribute directly to the future of space exploration.”

During his visit, Congressman Rogers also acknowledged MSU's role in saving a recent U.S. lunar mission after communication was lost with the Odysseus Lander following a problematic landing on the moon. He commended the staff and students' efforts over 72 hours that were crucial in preserving this significant mission.

Rogers submitted a tribute into the Congressional Record honoring those involved: Dr. Malphrus; staff members Chloe Hart from Ashland; Emily Walter from Pikeville; Nathan Fite; Christopher Smith; Seifala Moustaffa; along with students Mila Shearer and Carrie Bruce.
