In a historic move, House Republicans have voted to impeach Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for his alleged refusal to comply with federal immigration laws. The impeachment is based on two articles, accusing Mayorkas of willful and systematic refusal to comply with the law and breach of public trust.

According to U.S. Rep. Harold "Hal" Rogers (KY-05), who voted in favor of the impeachment, Mayorkas' actions have put the nation's borders at risk. Rogers stated, "Our nation's borders have been overrun with historic rates of illegal crossings, illegal drugs, human trafficking, and criminals who are infiltrating our communities, and it's time to hold Secretary Mayorkas accountable for violating his oath to defend the Constitution and this great nation."

The decision to impeach Mayorkas follows a nearly year-long investigation conducted by the House Committee on Homeland Security. The investigation revealed evidence that Mayorkas is "chiefly responsible for the chaos and devastation that has unfolded over the past three years." This includes the implementation of a mass catch-and-release scheme, violation of detention requirements, and misuse of parole authority.

In addition to the impeachment, House Republicans have passed the Secure the Border Act of 2023, which is being touted as the strongest border security bill in American history. However, Senate Democrats have refused to bring the legislation to a vote.

The statistics presented by Congressman Rogers highlight the severity of the situation. Over the last three years, there have been over 8.3 million illegal crossings nationwide, with at least 1.7 million individuals evading U.S. Border Patrol. Furthermore, the Biden Administration has acknowledged that 40 percent of illegal immigrants released on parole just before the end of the Title 42 pandemic border policy failed to check in with Immigration and Customs Enforcement as required.

The impeachment of Secretary Mayorkas is a significant development in the ongoing debate over immigration and border security. It reflects the concerns of House Republicans regarding the alleged neglect of federal immigration laws and the potential threats posed to the safety of Americans in every community.
