WASHINGTON, DC -- U.S. Rep. Harold "Hal" Rogers (KY-05), also known as the Dean of the House, voiced his concerns after the House voted to remove Congressman Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the House. This unprecedented decision marks the first time a House Speaker has been stripped of their gavel. Congressman Rogers, who had the privilege of swearing in Speaker McCarthy earlier this year, expressed his disappointment in the House's choice.
"The House made a monumental mistake by ousting Speaker McCarthy," said Congressman Rogers. "He displayed immense courage and leadership by negotiating a deal to avoid a government shutdown, even at the risk of losing his position. I am grateful for Speaker McCarthy's service, and I pray that this chamber will select a new leader quickly so that we can focus on working for the American people without targeting our leaders in a reckless manner."
The House is currently in recess until October 10, when Members are expected to reconvene for a speaker candidate forum. This forum will provide an opportunity for potential leaders to present their vision for the future of the House.
