City of Park issued the following announcement on Jan. 30
Councilwoman Donna Purvis (D-5) is partnering with the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity on Saturday, February 1st for a neighborhood cleanup between the 2400 to 2600 blocks of West Chestnut Street.
“Omega Psi Phi is a new neighbor to the area and its members are ready to work with surrounding neighbors to make a difference in this community,” says Purvis. “The cleanup is the first of many things the Fraternity wants to accomplish, and I invite anyone who would like to help to join us this Saturday.
“I am extremely enthusiastic about the opportunity our Fraternity has to contribute to the growth and involvement in uplifting the Russell community. The recent purchase of our Omega center is only the beginning of our mission and vision we have for the community,” says Dee Muldrow, President of the Theta Omega Alumni chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. “We want the public, particularly Russell residents and especially residents of the 2400 block of West Chestnut to benefit from this development. We pledge to actively interact with residents and will particularly focus on youth activities. We will adopt the area!”
The Theta Omega Alumni purchased property at 2424 West Chestnut Street for a new center in the community. Their goal is to bring to the community their four cardinal principles of: Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance and Uplift.
Manhood: We as Black Men will be role models for safety and assistance for the residents in the Russell community.
Scholarship: Our Men of Quality Initiative, for 22 years, has provided academic and educational attainment activities for young black males. With this location, we will expand to offer tutoring to youth in the area.
Perseverance: We will be a model of perseverance in achieving economic prosperity in a disadvantaged area.
Uplift: We will be active solid residents working to improve the environmental cleanliness of the block. We imagine a “Clean the Block Day” twice a year where all members and our mentees gather to perform work such as cleaning sidewalks, minor painting/repairs to homes and cleaning the adjacent alley. The goal is to have a safer and healthier environment by changing the dynamics of the neighborhood.
“There are many kinds of investments to be made in our neighborhoods to improve the quality of life throughout District 5. I want to thank Omega Psi Phi for their investment of time, talent and dedication to be a positive force in this neighborhood,” says Purvis.
The cleanup is set to begin at 11:00am on Saturday.
