During the first quarter of 2026, Hazard Health and Rehabilitation Center was the largest nursing home in Perry County, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) data shows.

The facility had 200 available beds—40 more than the Perry County average during the same period—and cared for an average of 187.2 residents each day.

CMS gave Hazard Health and Rehabilitation Center an overall rating of 1 out of 5, below the Kentucky statewide nursing home average of 3.

Paul E Patton Eastern KY Veterans Center followed as the county’s second largest, offering 120 beds in the first quarter of 2026.

Hazard Health and Rehabilitation Center reported no fines or penalties for the period.

Altogether, Perry County, Kentucky, had one for-profit nursing home operating.

U.S. Census Bureau estimates indicate that the number of older adults in the United States continues to expand while younger age groups fall. From 2020 to 2024, Americans age 65 and older increased by 13%, as the population under 18 decreased by 1.7%. The nation’s older population has seen significant growth over the last century, rising from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million in 2024.

A 2021 study found that about half of older adults, or roughly 28 million people, could need long-term services and support. Over a third may eventually require nursing home care, the report projects.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
